Iyengar Yoga — Northcote, Auckland, New Zealand
Yoga Essence
“Ancient Wisdom for Modern Lives.”
The School
A boutique studio with a long memory — and a precise method.
Yoga Essence is a boutique yoga school in Northcote, Auckland, founded by Marcia Leite — the teacher who opened Birkenhead’s first yoga school and has taught Iyengar yoga on Auckland’s North Shore for over two decades.
Some of her students have practised with her since 2004; many have stayed for five years or more. Since 2018 the school has made its home at 2/2 Howard Road, Northcote: a quiet, personal studio where classes stay small, instruction stays precise, and nobody is rushed.
Iyengar yoga is the form of Hatha yoga developed by B.K.S. Iyengar. It is known for precision, sequencing, and the intelligent use of props — belts, blocks, and blankets that allow every body, stiff or supple, young or older, to find the correct action in a pose. Postures are held rather than hurried through; alignment is adjusted; understanding deepens week by week. It is a practice that welcomes the complete beginner and rewards decades of study in equal measure.
Yoga Essence, in Marcia’s words, is a way of living your yoga — not a workout to complete, but a discipline of attention carried off the mat and into ordinary days.
Classes & Services
Seven offerings, one method. Each taught in the Iyengar tradition.
- 01
Iyengar Yoga Classes
Weekly group classes for beginners, general, and experienced students. Each class follows a sequenced syllabus — standing poses, seated poses, twists, forward extensions, backbends, and restorative work — taught with precise instruction and props wherever they serve the pose.
- 02
Beginners Courses
A structured introduction for complete newcomers: the foundational standing poses, how to use props, how to breathe, and how to practise safely. No flexibility and no experience required — only willingness and comfortable clothing.
- 03
Workshops
Longer-format weekend sessions that go deep on one theme — a family of poses, pranayama (breath regulation), or fully supported restorative practice. Best suited to students with some class experience; dates are announced through the studio.
- 04
Retreats
Multi-day immersions away from the city: extended morning and evening practice, quiet, simple food, and study. A chance to live the practice for a few days rather than visit it for an hour.
- 05
Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultation
One-to-one guidance in Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of health: daily routine, diet, rest, and habits considered against your constitution and your stage of life. Practical, unhurried, and personal.
- 06
Ayurvedic Psychological Counselling
Counselling grounded in the Ayurvedic understanding of mind and temperament — a reflective, confidential space to work through patterns of stress, habit, low mood, and sleeplessness, alongside your yoga practice.
- 07
Ayurvedic Massage & Teacher Training
Traditional oil massage (abhyanga) to settle the nervous system and support the body between classes. Separately, dedicated practitioners may apply for systematic Iyengar teacher training under Marcia’s mentorship — a long, serious undertaking.
New to yoga
The Beginners’ Room
You do not need to be flexible, fit, or young to begin. Flexibility is a result of practice, never a prerequisite. In the beginners’ course you learn the foundational standing poses — the alphabet of Iyengar yoga — how to use a belt, a block, and a blanket, and how to breathe without forcing.
Wear comfortable clothing you can move and stretch in. If you own a mat, bring it; otherwise ask when you enquire. Arrive a few minutes early. Tell Marcia about any injury, condition, or pregnancy before class begins — poses will be adapted or substituted, never pushed through pain. Most students are surprised, within weeks, by how much steadier they feel standing, sitting, and sleeping.
One-to-one & groups
Private Tuition & Corporate Sessions
Private tuition. A one-to-one session shaped entirely around your body, your injuries, and your aims — ideal if you are returning after a long break, working around a condition, or want to deepen a specific aspect of practice. Available at the Northcote studio by appointment.
Corporate and small groups. A regular class for your workplace or your own small group, taught at the studio or at your venue. Steady, unshowy, and genuinely useful for people who sit all day. Enquire with your group size and preferred time; pricing is confirmed per arrangement.

Questions, Answered
First the answer, then the detail.
Do I need to be flexible to start?A—01
No. Flexibility is a result of practice, not a requirement. Iyengar yoga uses props — belts, blocks, blankets — so every pose is adapted to your body as it is today. Stiff beginners are our most common, and most welcome, students.
What should I wear and bring?A—02
Comfortable clothing you can move in, and a few minutes to spare. If you own a mat, bring it; otherwise ask when you enquire. Bring water, and arrive a little early so class can begin settled and on time.
I have an injury — or I’m pregnant. Can I practise?A—03
Often yes, with guidance — but tell us first. Mention any injury, condition, or pregnancy before class, and poses will be adapted or substituted. Nothing is pushed through pain. When in doubt, check with your doctor first.
Where is the studio?A—04
2/2 Howard Road, Northcote, Auckland 0627. The studio has been in Northcote since 2018, serving the North Shore. Call (555) 010-2030 for directions and parking details.
How do I book? Do I need to book ahead?A—05
Call or send the form below — new students enquire first. We ask newcomers to get in touch before their first visit so Marcia can place you in the right class for your level. After that, regulars simply come to their weekly class.
