The firm

A family-run firm. Over fifty years on London's rooftops. We still answer the phone, still survey every job in person, and still stand behind the work when the scaffolding comes down.

McDonald Roofing Contractors Ltd. began in Chiswick in 1973 as a small family firm. Today we work across West, South-West and North London on everything from a slipped slate over a Victorian terrace to full re-roofs of listed buildings in conservation areas. Our specialism is domestic work: the roofs people live under. Every enquiry gets a proper survey and a written, no-obligation quote — free, with no sales patter attached.

01

Slating

Natural slate, stripped back and re-laid properly. We take failing coverings off, repair the battens and structure underneath, and lay new slate in diminishing or regular courses to suit the house. A slate roof done well is built to last — we build them that way.

Pitched roofs
02

Tiling

Plain tiles, pantiles and interlocking profiles for London's period and post-war stock. We match existing tiles on repairs so a patch doesn't shout, and on full re-tiles we re-bed ridges, renew valleys and sort the ventilation while we're up there.

03

Flat roofing — zinc, copper, felt, asphalt

Extensions, dormers, garages and outbuildings. Standing-seam zinc and copper for a crisp, long-life finish; high-performance felt and mastic asphalt where the budget or the building calls for it. Every flat roof falls correctly to its outlets — the detail that decides whether it lasts.

04

General roofing repairs

Leaks traced to source, slipped slates and tiles re-fixed, failed lead flashing renewed, storm damage made safe. We diagnose before we quote: if a repair will genuinely hold, we'll say so; if the roof is finished, we'll tell you that too.

Listed buildings & conservation areas

Much of our work sits in conservation areas and on listed buildings. We use like-for-like materials, photograph and document the existing roof, and produce the clear written records conservation officers ask for. Period detailing — dentil courses, clay ridges, lead work — is our home ground.

FAQ

Is the quote really free?

Yes. Every enquiry gets a survey and a written, no-obligation quote at no charge. We don't do sales visits or pressure tactics — if the job isn't for us, we'll tell you.

Do you work on listed buildings?

Regularly. We specialise in like-for-like repairs on listed buildings and in conservation areas, using matching materials and keeping the photographic records conservation officers require.

Which areas do you cover?

West, South-West and North London — from Kensington and Chelsea to Richmond, Kingston, Hampstead and Belsize Park. We're based in Acton; nearby streets are our daily patch.

How long does a re-roof take?

It depends on size, pitch and material. A typical domestic re-roof runs one to two weeks. Your written quote includes an agreed schedule before we start.

Do you handle emergency repairs?

Yes — leaks, storm damage, missing slates. Call the office and we'll make it safe as fast as London traffic allows.
