CHAPTER 04 — YARD SCHOOL
Straight answers.
How short should my grass be cut?
St. Augustine 3.5–4 inches (4+ in shade), Bermuda 1.5–2, Zoysia 1.5–2. Never scalp it — short cuts stress the plant and invite weeds.
How often should it be mowed?
St. Augustine 7–10 days, Bermuda 5–7, Zoysia 7–10 in growing season. Bermuda grows fastest and punishes skipped weeks.
Do you bag the clippings?
No — we mulch them back in, finely chopped. It returns nutrients to the soil. Free fertilizer, every visit.
Why do sharp blades matter?
Dull blades tear grass instead of cutting it, and torn tips yellow. Ours are sharpened weekly — brown lawns a day after mowing are usually dull blades, not the sun.
Can I overseed bare spots?
Only common Bermuda takes seed; St. Augustine and Zoysia need sod. And thatch is rarely the problem people think it is.
How much does mowing cost?
Every yard is different — quotes are based on the amount of mowing and edging required. A fast estimate is often available from satellite imagery of your address.
