Straight answers from twenty years of Austin lawns. The short version is always first.
It depends on the grass: St. Augustine 3.5–4 inches (4+ in shade), Bermuda 1.5–2 inches, Zoysia 1.5–2 inches. The golden rule is never scalp it — cutting too short stresses the plant and invites weeds. Shady St. Augustine especially wants that extra height to catch light.
St. Augustine every 7–10 days, Bermuda every 5–7 days, Zoysia every 7–10 days in growing season. Bermuda grows the fastest and punishes skipped weeks. We set the schedule to your grass type, not to our route convenience.
No — we mulch them back into the lawn, finely chopped. Mulched clippings return nutrients to the soil instead of filling your trash bin. It’s free fertilizer, every single visit.
A dull blade tears grass instead of cutting it, and torn tips turn yellow. That’s why our blades are sharpened weekly. If your lawn looks brown a day after mowing, dull blades are the usual suspect — not the Texas sun.
Only if it’s common Bermuda — St. Augustine and Zoysia must be sodded, seed won’t establish them. And don’t stress about thatch: in Austin lawns it’s rarely the problem people think it is. Watering-wise, aim for about an inch a week, applied in 2–3 deep early-morning sessions.
