Full yard, design to build
Grade, drainage, patio, walls, planting, lighting — the whole outdoor space rethought at once. Our most common project, and the one we do best.
Garden design + installation — Vancouver, BC
Take Root Gardens is a Vancouver design-and-build studio for outdoor space. For more than ten years we have drawn the plans, moved the soil, laid the stone, and planted the beds ourselves — one crew from first sketch to final walkthrough. The gardens we build are meant to be lived in, not fussed over: the right plants in the right spots, so your weekends stay yours.
Scaled plans drawn for your actual yard — sun, shade, drainage, and how you use the space. You approve every plant before anything is ordered.
Our own crew builds what we draw. No hand-off to a stranger with a shovel: the people who designed it plant it.
Plant-only packages for do-it-yourself builds: a bed-by-bed plan with species, spacing, and quantities you can take to any nursery.
Stone, pavers, and gravel paths laid on a proper base so they stay level through Vancouver rain. Curves where they should curve.
Walls that hold back soil and look like they grew there. Engineered where the height calls for it.
Cedar decks and fences built straight and true, finished for wet-coast weather.
Low-voltage lighting that keeps the garden usable after dark — paths, trees, and one or two moments of drama.
Small fountains and pondless falls sized for city lots. Sound without the maintenance headache.
Beds that come back every year, with herbs and vegetables folded into the planting so the pretty garden feeds you too.
Sample project types — every yard starts with a site visit

New beds, a proper path to the door, and planting that looks good in February, not just June. Big curb appeal, modest budget.
The forgotten strip between houses becomes a shade garden with a gravel path and a place to sit. Small spaces are our favorite puzzle.

How we work
STEP 01
We visit, measure, and talk through how you actually use the space — morning coffee spots, kids, dogs, drainage gripes.
STEP 02
A scaled design with plants, materials, and one fixed quote. We revise until it feels right.
STEP 03
Demo, grading, hardscape, planting — one crew, a tidy site, most builds done in three to six weeks.
STEP 04
A final walkthrough plus a seasonal care sheet. Questions in the first year get answered.

Most of our work: full yards, front entries, side passages, and rooftops. If it is your home and it is outdoors, we probably do it.

Questions
It depends on yard size and scope. A planting refresh costs far less than a full design-and-build with patios and walls. Call us and we will tell you honestly whether your budget fits your wish list. Any numbers on this page are samples only.
For most garden work, none are needed. Beds, plantings, and patios rarely need permits in Vancouver. Taller retaining walls and some drainage work can — we flag it at the site visit and handle the paperwork for what we build.
Design takes two to four weeks; builds vary. A planting bed can be done in days. A full yard with patios, walls, and lighting usually runs three to six weeks of build time.
We design for low maintenance, not for a maintenance contract. Right plants, right spots — so the yard does not demand your weekends. You get a seasonal care sheet, and questions in the first year get answered.
