About Landscene

Gardens that suit Auckland sections, built to be lived in.

I’m Philip, and I run Landscene Landscaping out of Mt Eden. Most of my work is within a short drive of home — villa gardens in Mt Eden, bungalow sections in Epsom, courtyards in Newmarket. I design planting that copes with Auckland clay and humid summers, and I keep gardens tidy on a regular schedule so they never slide backwards. I also take part in community gardening events with the Garden Design Society of NZ, which keeps me around other people who take plants seriously. If your garden has outgrown your weekends, that is exactly the point where I come in.

What I do

Services

  1. 01

    Garden design

New planting layouts, bed shapes and garden structure designed around your section’s sun, soil and drainage. I draw up a simple plan first, so you can see the whole picture before any digging starts.

  2. 02

    Planting

Supply and installation of shrubs, perennials and native planting. Species are chosen to suit Auckland conditions, so the garden still looks good with ordinary, realistic care.

  3. 03

    Lawn care

Regular mowing, edging, fertilising and weed control. One-off cuts for overgrown lawns as well as scheduled visits through the growing season.

  4. 04

    Hedge trimming

Shaping and height reduction for privet, griselinia, pittosporum and other common Auckland hedges. Green waste is removed and the site left swept clean.

  5. 05

    Garden clean-ups

One-off tidy-ups: weeding, pruning, leaf clearance and green waste removal. A good reset before a property goes on the market or after a season of neglect.

  6. 06

    Maintenance plans

Ongoing care on a set schedule — fortnightly or monthly visits covering mowing, weeding, pruning and seasonal tasks. You always know what was done and when.

How the work runs

Three ways to use Landscene

Card 01 / Design

Design the garden

A typical redesign starts with a walk around the section and a chat about how you actually use the space — kids, dogs, entertaining, or just something easy on the eyes. Then a planting plan: bed shapes, species lists, and a sequence for the work. Designs favour plants that handle Auckland clay and dry spells, with structure from hedging and year-round interest from perennials and natives.

Card 02 / Clean-up & planting

Reset & plant

The most common job I get: a garden that got away from its owners. Weeds pulled, overgrowth cut back, hedges reshaped, beds re-edged and mulched, lawns cut and fed. Then new planting goes in where the gaps are — chosen for the spot, not just for the catalogue photo. Most clean-ups and small planting jobs finish within a day or two, and the green waste leaves with me.

  • Hedge reshape & lawn rescue
  • Gap planting & mulch

Card 03 / Ongoing care

Kept tidy, always

Maintenance plans are for people who want the garden handled. Fortnightly or monthly visits: mowing and edging, weeding, seasonal pruning, fertiliser when it is due. Same faces, same schedule, and a quick note after each visit saying what was done. It costs less than most people expect, and the garden never needs another rescue job.

Residential & small commercial

Who it’s for

Residential & commercial

Residential

Family sections, rental properties, new builds and pre-sale tidy-ups. A lot of the work is Mt Eden villas and Epsom bungalows with gardens that have outgrown their owners’ weekends — steep banks, old hedges, lawns that need rescuing.

If you are selling, a one-off clean-up before photography day usually pays for itself several times over. If you are staying, a maintenance plan keeps the place looking sharp without you lifting a spade.

Commercial

Small office grounds, childcare centres, café courtyards and body-corporate common areas. Set schedules, tidy crews, and invoices that need no chasing — the grounds just stay presentable, week in, week out.

Commercial sites get the same deal as residential: a written quote after a site visit, agreed dates, and green waste taken away. Regular slots are available across the service area.

Questions

Frequently asked

What work do you actually do? +

Garden design, planting, lawn care, hedge trimming, one-off clean-ups and regular maintenance plans. Residential sections are the core of it — villas, bungalows, new builds — plus small commercial sites like office grounds and childcare centres.

Which areas do you cover? +

Mt Eden, Epsom, Remuera, St Heliers, Newmarket and the Eastern Bays. I’m based in Mt Eden, so those suburbs are the regular rounds. Anywhere else in Auckland is possible by arrangement — just ask.

How do I get a price? +

Email [email protected] or call 021 637 796 with a few photos of the garden. Philip replies with a written quote, and quotes inside the service area are free. Bigger design projects start with a site visit and a simple plan.

Do you work with local gardening groups? +

Landscene takes part in community gardening events with the Garden Design Society of NZ — local shows, garden visits and hands-on days. It keeps the plant knowledge fresh and the local connections strong. Ask Philip what is coming up next.
