Air Conditioning & Heating — one small shop

Henry's Top Notch is a small heating and cooling shop serving Houston. No call center, no upsell script — a technician shows up in the scheduled window, walks the system with you, and finds the actual fault before any number gets mentioned.

Most visits end in a repair, not a sales pitch. Capacitors, contactors, refrigerant, blower motors, drain lines: the usual suspects, carried on the truck, fixed the same day. And when a system is genuinely past saving, you'll see the repair-versus-replace math in writing before anyone talks about new equipment.

The shop runs on four rules: diagnose first, quote in writing, recommend the repair when the repair is honest, and leave the work area cleaner than it was found. Simple rules, kept every time.

Services, plainly described

Everything the shop does, in one place.

AC repair covers the full failure catalog: dead compressors, frozen coils, weak airflow, warm vents, breakers that won't stay on, water pooling under the air handler. The tech inspects electrical, refrigerant, airflow, and drainage, then shows you the failed part before quoting.

System replacement starts with a Manual J load calculation — the new unit gets sized for your house, not copied off the old nameplate. Line sets are flushed or replaced, the thermostat is set up and walked through with you, and the system runs a full test cycle before the truck leaves. Old equipment goes with us.

Heating service for Houston's short, sharp winter: furnace tune-ups, ignition and safety checks, heat pump changeover service in the fall — because furnaces love to fail in January after nine idle months.

Two ways to pay attention.

The usual calls — a vertical log of typical jobs

The 4pm August no-cool

Condenser fan motor seized on a 12-year-old unit. Motor, capacitor, and a full airflow check — cooling again the same evening, replacement math laid out for later.

The upstairs that never cooled

Two supply runs crushed behind drywall and a return starved for air. Duct repair and rebalancing; the thermostat finally tells the truth.

The January surprise

Furnace ignition failure on the first real cold snap. Ignitor and flame sensor service, safety controls verified, heat back before dinner.

The full changeout

Seventeen-year-old system, third repair in two summers. Load calculation, new line set, modern thermostat — sized for the house, not the old label.

Replace

Good to know — rotates

Change the filter before you call anyone.

A clogged filter freezes coils, kills airflow, and mimics a dying system. Check it monthly in summer; if light doesn't pass through, it's done. Five minutes, a few dollars, and a surprising number of "emergencies" end right there.

Keep two feet clear around the outdoor unit.

Bushes, mulch, and stored boxes choke the condenser. It needs breathing room to dump heat — crowding it is like running with a hand over your mouth.

Pour a cup of vinegar down the drain line, twice a year.

Algae clogs the condensate drain, the pan overflows, and the ceiling pays for it. A cup of plain vinegar in spring and fall keeps it clear.

Don't crank the thermostat to cool faster.

Setting it to 60 doesn't make the system work harder — it just runs longer past your comfort point. Set the temperature you actually want and let it get there.

Move your cursor.

A small reminder that airflow is invisible until something moves through it. (Harmless dots. They fade.)

Questions, answered plainly.

How fast can someone come out? +

Same-day or next-day across most of Houston during the week. Heat waves fill the board fast; maintenance plan customers get first pick of what's left.

My AC blows warm air. What is it usually? +

A failed capacitor, low refrigerant from a leak, a frozen coil, or a dead contactor — in roughly that order. A diagnostic visit names it in under an hour.

How do you decide between repair and replace?

Age of the system against the cost of the repair. Past 12–15 years with a big-ticket repair, replacement usually wins. Both numbers on paper, you decide.

Do you work on all brands?

Residential split and package systems from the major manufacturers, yes. If a part is hard to source for an older unit, you'll hear that before any work starts.

What does the maintenance plan actually include?

Two visits a year — coil cleaning, refrigerant verification, electrical tightening, drain flushing — plus priority scheduling when the board fills up.

Good to have ready

Monday–Saturday across Houston. Your address, the unit's brand if you know it, and what's going wrong — plus photos of the thermostat reading and the outdoor unit, so the tech brings the right parts on the first trip. Emergency calls get picked up as long as a tech is on the road.
