Chapter 01 · The practice

We build structural landscapes designed from the ground up.

Calgary Landscaping has spent twenty-three years doing one thing: designing and building residential landscapes that survive Calgary. That means starting with the unglamorous parts — soil, grade, drainage, frost — and only then talking about patios and plantings.

We're a provincially licensed Alberta contractor, not a mow-and-blow crew with a paver supplier. Our process is integrated: the same team that draws your plan builds it, so the drainage detail on paper is the drainage detail in the ground. Homeowners call it "no stone unturned." We call it the only way to build.

Call (403) 237-6300 — Mon to Fri, 8 to 5 — and bring us your worst yard problem. We've probably already solved it twice this month.

Chapter 02 · The work, scattered

Elements of a finished yard

Planned for the climate first

Calgary's clay soils and freeze–thaw cycles decide the construction detail: base depths, wall footings, drainage sizing. The pretty part comes last — and stays.

No stone unturned
  • PatiosWell-planned patios built for comfort and durability — pavers or natural stone on bases sized for heaving soils.
  • DecksThoughtfully designed decks built for long-term enjoyment, framed for snow load and low-maintenance summers.
  • Retaining wallsStructural walls that manage grade and stability — the engineering behind a sloped yard that stays put.
  • Pergolas & fencesCustom outdoor structures adding function and privacy, integrated into the landscape from the first sketch.
  • IrrigationEfficient zoned systems for healthy landscapes, pressure-balanced and winterized before the first hard freeze.
  • LightingSelected and installed for safety, usability and security — the yard keeps working after dark.
  • PlantingTrees, shrubs and beds planned for soil, spacing and long-term growth in a short growing season.
  • DesignFull construction drawings before anything is built: grades, sections, planting plans, lighting layouts.

Chapter 03 · Sequence

How a project moves

Order of operations is the whole game. Drainage before planting, structures before finishes, drawings before shovels.

01

Consultation

Call or write. We talk about what's wrong, what you want, and what budget range feels right. Rough photos help.

02

Site visit & drawings

We walk the lot, read drainage and grade, then produce a design with a fixed-scope estimate.

03

Sequenced build

Excavation, base, drainage, structures, surfaces, planting, lighting — supervised daily, site cleaned nightly.

04

Walkthrough & care

Final walkthrough together, written care guidance, and a maintenance program if you want one.

Chapter 04 · Residential / Commercial

Two clients, one standard

Residential

Backyards that get used. From a first patio to a full transformation, residential work gets the same engineering discipline as our largest jobs.

  • Full backyard design & construction
  • Front-yard curb appeal rebuilds
  • Outdoor living: kitchens, fire features, seating
  • Drainage fixes and grade corrections
  • Seasonal maintenance programs

Commercial

Grounds that hold up to traffic, tenants and Alberta weather — scheduled, documented and built to spec.

  • Multi-unit and condo common areas
  • Office and retail frontages
  • Snow-season drainage planning
  • Irrigation audits and retrofits
  • Ongoing maintenance contracts

Chapter 07 · Asked often

Straight answers

Do I need a design before construction?
Yes — design first is how you avoid building twice. In Calgary it prevents the costly mid-build changes we regularly get called in to fix.
How does the climate change your construction?
Clay soils, freeze–thaw and Chinook melt dictate base depths, wall footings and drainage sizing. Planned around them, landscapes last; ignored, they don't.
Will I need permits?
Sometimes — attached structures, irrigation cross-connections and major grade changes can require them. We verify during planning so nothing stalls mid-build.
How long does a project take?
Scope, materials and weather decide. Simple work goes quickly; full transformations take longer. We give a realistic timeline after design — not a hopeful one.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — a provincially licensed Alberta contractor, fully insured. Twenty-three years in this market doesn't happen by cutting those corners.
