Q1My sink or toilet is blocked — what should I do first?
Don't pour chemical drain cleaner down it — call a plumber. Caustic chemicals rarely clear a real blockage and they can damage pipes (and burn whoever ends up clearing it).
The most common causes we see are tree roots, grease and fat, hair, and too much tissue or toilet paper. We'll run a camera down first so we know exactly what we're dealing with, then clear it by hand or with a hydro jet.
Q2How do I know if I have a gas leak?
Trust your nose first: a rotten-egg or sulphur smell is the big one. Other signs include a hissing or whistling sound near a fitting, a pilot flame that's gone weak, visible damage to the meter or pipework, or unexplained nausea and dizziness indoors.
If you suspect a leak: don't touch any switches, turn the gas off at the meter if it's safe to reach, open windows, get everyone out, and call (555) 010-2030 immediately.
Q3Should I repair or replace my hot water system?
It comes down to age and breakdown frequency. A unit under eight years old with its first fault is usually worth repairing; one past ten years that's breaking down every winter is usually cheaper to replace.
